Hi Guys N Gals!
I want to start my own Design Agency but am scared of losing my steady income (fulltime Graphic Designer for newspaper) as have a baby due in November and money is obviously a major factor. I guess there's no right or wrong time to start a business but I thought I'd build it up slowly working in evenings and weekends. I'm confident my business will work as I have the skills and have done the research but at the end of the day it's a punt like any new business.
I guess my question is, has anyone been in a similar situation where you've wanted to start a business but certain factors dictate you should be more sensible and stick to your full time employment?
Cheers in advance
Tim

Hi Tim
I would stay in the full time employmant at least till you get the business somewhat started on the side.
I left my well paid job 18 months ago and started two businesses myself. With one of them we have had a relentless string of bad luck, to the point where is it draining the other business of any profit and my savings of 20K are nearly completely gone! And I don't have a family to support, which would be extra worry...
There are also hundreds of graphic designers out there who have already done what you are thinking, as its fairly inexpensive to set up on your own. I would definately establish some clients first.
Also, the other thing to consider is that it is completely different when working from home. It will be so tempting to help out your wife/girlfriend when the baby is crying and she needs a break, but you have to shut the door and work would like you would do in a full time job, it is very difficut to do that...
Congratualtions, by the way! Good luck

Cheers Rachel!
I think you're right. I have a few clients already but it wouldn't hurt to build it up gradually before going fulltime. This time the head wins
