We are launching an online retail website next week. Our product is reading glasses and accessories. In the first instance our stock is held in my garage but we have plans to expand - hopefully!
My question relates to using our home address as the trading address for the business an publishing that on the site - is this a bad idea? Does that then incur the possibilities of business rates etc. etc. Would I be better off getting a managed service address? The address is 100% for correspondence only. There will be no face to face transactions. All the packing etc. will be done from the home though.
Advice appreciated.
Thanks.

We have a free article on the legal issues on running a business from home and have copied the link below, there is a PDF to download on the page.

Hi Funspex,
You may find an issue with banks if you want to accept credit cards.

If you're just needing the address for correspondance, why not get a PO Box address. I think they're about £60 / year and then another £60 / year if you want the mail automatically redelivered to your house. Check out the Royal Mail website.
For bank accounts etc., you'd still give your home address but need not publish this on your website. However, if you register for VAT or as a Ltd. company, you would need to make your real address public knowledge.
This is what I did when I ran my business from home initially. It worked very well and has the added advantage of if you move, customers will always have the right address even if they have an old invoice or catalogue etc.

I don't think PO boxes are good idea for stat up companies as I personally would not buy from someone who uses a post code.
We started from home and eventually moved out to a business premises and don't think this will incurr any charges for a start-up business. Would advise you to contact your local council for their policies though.

Hi there,
A number of 'virtual office' companies offer mailing address services, they tend to be quite cheap as well, especially if you can find one fairly locally to your home.
Hope this helps a bit!

We offer virtual offices but I'm going to do myself out of some business here!
It would make sense for you to have stock etc delivered to your home address so using a mailing address and then forwarding the mail could get expensive.
Why not use a suite number or give your house a businessy sounding name....e.g.
Suite 2/1 (your flat number)
123 Party St
Or
The FunSpex Building
123 Party St
Good luck - my mum's always losing her reading glasses so you could have a ready customer there!
