Hi All
I am brand sparkly new to this forum/site but am very impressed with the services that it provides.
I am looking to start and internet business with one of the revenue streams coming from adverts publicised on my site in the form of banner ads etc.
Does anyone know where I could find guidance on realistic prices for such advertising to give me an idea of how much I should be looking to charge companies.
I look forward to your responses
Warm Regards
Rich

Hi Rich,
You have to getting a massive amount of page views and unique visitors before even starting to consider selling advertising space on a site. Considering the average click through rate for most sites is only about 2% you can see why.
How much traffic is your site getting and I might be able to advise you on what you could get away with charging!
Welcom to the forum BTW

Hi welcome to the forum,
I have a few personal hobby sites that I started a while ago. Recently I have been receiving quite a few visitors and so I put google adsense on the site. It now pays for the google adwords I have for all my other sites.
This means I am advertising other ventures for free. You could at least get a bit of revenue back from adsense while you build up your visitors.

Hi Rich,
The other posts are right, you need to be generating tons of pageviews and many unique visitors (in to thousands) before you can start bringing a steady revenue from banner advertising.
The bests ways to generate some income from advertising is either Adsense (from Google - as mentioned) or affiliate schemes - check out http://www.ukaffiliates.com or http://www.tradedoubler.co.uk for lots of companies you can advertise and make commission on refererals and customers you pass their way.
Hope this helps,

Maybe you should look at some companies like Google.
They claim that by placing their own pay per click ads, you can generate some income: Google AdSense (when you read their webpages related to this, sounds great if you have got a lot of visitors).
You can also use google to promote your own business website using "adwords".
Also, i guess their competitors such as inktomi/overture etc will have a similar offer!

Hello,
Simply guarantee that visiors will be coming to your website on a regular basis and you can charge what you want to interested businesses wanting to advertise their services on your website.
Do not be tempted to replicate what is already working somewhere else as it negates creativity and innovation not to talk about making your project just one of competing ones.
Stand out, believe in it, defend your position and the world will be at your feet.
Good luck, go out there and do all you can to be unique.

Hi All
Thank you very much for your kind advice.
I am sure you can understand that at this stage I can't go into too much detail on my business idea apart from one of my main objectives is to drum up traffic to the site. The type of advertising costs I was looking to take advantage of was subscriptions (flat rate fees) to advertise on the site rather than pay per click. I suppose this type of fee would require a hell of a lot of justification as to why my business would be effective for businesses to advertise with me when pay per click would appear more cost effective for them.
To begin it make sense to start with pay per click banners until traffic increases.
If anyone has advice or experience with subscription based advertising it would be much appreciated.
Warm Regard
Rich

Rich,
I've never used subcription based advertising on a web site but I can see merit in it provided you can justify the price. How about a combination of subscription (low monthly fee) and a pay per click?
At the end of the day any business will see your advertising as a risk unless it is somehow linked to increasing their business....just need to think fo win-win approaches (sorry for using such a poor phrase).
