I meant to add that I don't yet have a website, as the business is mostly face-to-face. Can you have something like Google Checkout and not have a website? Thanks.

this would interest me too. my concern is that i want to take card payments but can't really afford it - prices are steep - but my target audience is 50+ and as late adaptors of paying online i'm worried they won't use paypal, google etc

Paypal now offer Paypal pro with a virtual terminal.
It costs around £20 a month, plus a % of each transaction. I use it in conjunction with web payments and it works well, you just take the customers details and enter the amount and details online.
