This morning wy wife recieved the dreaded Jury Service call up notice. As we are still considered a new start with my wife the vital component (which we cannot function without) Is this suitable enough grounds for her being excused.
Regards
Tony

Thanks everyone.
My contingency plan (which I am having trouble persuading her to do) is for her to attend the first day selection process and have the biggest, noisiest, disruptive, staged - phobic breakdown - blaming this on a unique but unrecognised condition known as Judicialphobia. Hopefully resulting in complete exclusion from this and any future courtroom appointments.
Will this work...
Regards
Tony

LOL - the Judicialphobia should work in any case! Try appealling to their sensitive side, and when that fails then blag it!

My experience (quite a while ago), was that if you wrote to them with your good reason they listened.

Good reasons i have heard of that have worked:
- Death (though the guy was dead quite a while before they called him up)
- Sickness (A mate took a sick line from his doctor stating that he was suffering from stress & his condition would be worsened)
- Madness (I heard of one person who signed themselves into a psychiatric hospital, figuring a couple of days evaluation was better than whatever time jury service might last).
Not sure which i'd recommend though....
Might it not be better to put your wifes part in the business on hold and use the time to regroup & review plans?

http://www.cjsonline.gov.uk/juror/faqs/index.html#1634 deals with this. It is a discretionary matter regarding the business but if it is shown you would suffer great financial loss, miss the opportunity to start now etc they may take pity.
Ill health has to be supported by the GP and will go on your sick record so probably better not to go down that route unless your wife does have a medical problem which makes it difficult for example for her to sit for long periods of time.

Thanks once again.
Lee, based on this...."unless your wife does have a medical problem which makes it difficult for example for her to sit for long periods of time."
Kind of....
She does find it difficult to keep her gob shut for more than 5 minutes - do you think our GP will support this.

i am a freelance designer so my business would cease - I was excused on the basis of that but as stated above if I was asked to do it again I would not be able to refuse.
You got always get convicted for a minor offence - that precludes you for life!

a friend of mine was called for jury service, he spent 2 weeks there but didnt get to hear a single case. The one he was suposed to sit on he had to back down from as he could be seen as having a biased opinion however so this is probabally rare.
