I have recently set up as a sole trader and I am a little unclear about where the line falls as to what _are_ and what _aren't_ legitimate business expenses.
Two cases:
1. I have a mobile phone that I use both for business and personal use - can I claim the line rental as business expenses?
2. I travel both for business and pleasure - ie I might go to Spain to research a new business idea but also to have a holiday at the same time. Can I claim the whole cost of the trip as a business expense? What proof, if any, is needed that I was doing business 'things' on my trip?
Any advice would be most appreciated - many thanks!
Richard

Hi Richard
In response to your questions on expenses, I have been advised that the mobile phone can be submitted as a company expense.
As for a business trip, I think you can claim for the flight and the hotel but all food and drink is hard to claim for - keep all your receipts from your whole trip and if in any doubt contact your accountant who will advise you correctly.
Hope this helps

The official line for the allowance of expenses is that they must be wholly and exclusively for the use of the trade.
This would mean that mobile phones etc would only be allowed if they are used soley for business purposes. However, in reality, Your accountnant will disallow part of the total cost of the phone bill for any private use you have and allow the rest.
As for trips abroad. Was this a total business trip or was it part of a holiday? If it was exclusively for business, then yes, expenses can be claimed (Except food and drink). If however, a holiday was also invloved then you will be unlikely to claim anything. Again, your accountant will inform you better

Hi Richard,
Sounds like the sort of business I want to be involved in (;0)
Seriously, if you have business contacts in Spain or spend a lot of time there, we might be able to do business. Contact me.
