The basic package is free and (if you should need to) allows modular upgrades so that you only have to pay for what you are going to use. For most small or part-time self-employed it should do all you need. They are just about to increase their update prices but it is still a bargain.

Hi Keith, for sole traders I would recommend using SamsTax (www.samstax.co.uk). The software is tailored to specific industry sectors and therefore makes it a LOT easier to fill in the self employment supplement of your self assessment tax return. If you're not sure then they have a one month free trial.

Checkout Quickbooks as they seem pretty popular, there is also Microsoft Office Accounting which seems easy to use but is very new.
