Hi,
I have just set-up as a website designer. I am working as a sole trader. Can anybody recommend some accounting software suitable for a Sole Trader? I'd like to spend as little as possible on it preferably under £50 if possible.
Thanks
Keith

Hi Keith,
Try having a look at http://www.omniaccounts.com/.
The basic package is free and (if you should need to) allows modular upgrades so that you only have to pay for what you are going to use. For most small or part-time self-employed it should do all you need.
They are just about to increase their update prices but it is still a bargain.

Hi
I've tried downloading this and the site is out of date, but I've contacted them and a vista compatible version can be found here...

It's looking pretty good so far...

Hi Keith,
Have a look at www.dosh.co.uk- Dosh Software produce a simple to use bookkeeping program called Cashbook which is used by over 150,000 businesses throughout the U.K. It is offered by The Prince's Trust to the businesses it supports and by Lloyds TSB to its business banking customers. Free trials of Cashbook (and a number of other small-business financial management packages) are available from Dosh Software's website.
Best regards,
Nick

Hi Keith, for sole traders I would recommend using SamsTax (www.samstax.co.uk). The software is tailored to specific industry sectors and therefore makes it a LOT easier to fill in the self employment supplement of your self assessment tax return. If you're not sure then they have a one month free trial.

The small business accounting software for sle traders is written on excel accounting spreadsheets, produces your profit statement, calculates the tax and national insurancve liability and automatically completes a copy of the self employed tax return. Cost is just £11.99

Checkout Quickbooks as they seem pretty popular, there is also Microsoft Office Accounting which seems easy to use but is very new.

if you are not going to be VAT registered and your business is fairly simple you would be ok with a simple spreadsheet...

I've used taxcalc for years. No complaints whatsoever.
Costs £25 and leads you though your return in a simple format and assumes you have no knowlage of tax and have never filled in a return before. One click file online or you can print your return out in traditional forms. It's also partnered by HMRC.
