Hi,
I run a new 'limited' company formed in november 2002. I sell training booklets through my website currently paid for by cheque. I am in the process of having the booklets developed into computer based training packages that can be purchased by credit/debit card and downloaded from the website. The company who are developing the training packages are building e-commerce facilities and have advised they will be setting up using protx for card processing. They asked me to get an internet merchant id from my bank (RBOS) but I find they deal with a processor called streamline.
I thought an IM-ID was just a number but now I find it's very complicated and expensive. Can anyone offer advice on which bank deals with protx and would be the best value for money for me based on the above information and sales transactions about 200 per annum at approx £300 each.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Simon

According to this page the RBS should be aware of this system,

Maybe look into getting a Merchant account with Worldpay. (You do not need a bank merchant account with them) We use them and never had any problems. We carry out a large volume of transactions every month.

WorldPay are not the cheapest to setup but they do offer in my opinion the best service. I would strongly advise you to call their sales team as we were offered a £100.00 discount over the phone if we signed up with them within a few days. We were going to anyway but thought we would speak to them first to check a few points. Was well worth the call!
They can be found online at www.worldpay.com

I can also recommend Worldpay. They are a little slow to set up accounts, but once up and running, they are great. They are making lots of improvements at the moment too. They are a little more expensive than some merchant service providers, but I'd still recommend them.

Hi
I am (still) in the process of setting up with worldpay. I decided to go with them (merchant id with natwest aka RBOS) as they sounded more reliable than others.
However I was told by them that the entire process of setting up an account would only take a week. But over a month later it is still holding up my site from going live. Although it will accept payments from customers it does not pass the order info back to my company thus rendering order processing impossible!
Also, like any big company, when you ring you end up holding forever and then being passed around from department to department etc!
Cest la vie! I am still managing to keep my sense of humour - just [:p]

Tell me about it! I slightly complicated the process by changing the goalposts mid-way through application, but I had to do a lot of chasing. I found it helpful to get hold of real-people's email addresses there rather than end up in the applications@worldpay bottomless bucket! Once up and running, they seem quite attentive though. Just don't expect them to rush. I think they are very busy!

If my likely sales via the net are < £200 then the best approach, financially, is to just have an order form isn't it and no online payments...?

Hi there,
A good solution I have heard of lately is www.protx.com. They charge 20 pounds a month and then that is it - no transaction charges or anything. For this you have to have less than 1000 transactions per quarter and after that they charge 10p per transaction with no monthly fee. I am considering it if things take off but at the moment I am using the paypal system which does ok for me at the moment.
Hope this is some use!

It's worth noting that to use Protx, you need your own merchant account. I believe there was also talk of them changing their transaction charges.

Dear Tom
With small payments PayPal ( http://www.paypal.com ) may be a practical solution for you to offer as an alternative to just sending cheques if you are operating on-line - while you grow. There are no set up costs and the charge is about 3% plus a few pence per transaction - the money stays in your paypal account and when you draw it down to your chosen account you pay 50p per draw down. Your customers can then pay with Access, Visa, Amex, Discovery, Solo or Switch. Some find it a bit of a pain having to verify details, or if they operate on very small margings - but for what it is its pretty darn good. Regards.
