my opinion...make the leap, go for it, quit the job on good terms,.if you are confident about your business and can ride the recession out then just think how well you will be placed to catch the market when the upturn comes.
A lot of people make a lot of money in troubled times..look how felix dennis started out....
Only you know whats right for you...good luck

Does your company offer career breaks? Many do, although unpaid if you could get 3 months off lets say then the risk is minimal as you can always go back and you just need to ensure you have funds for 3 months worth of personal bills.

find another job which is different hours, I know exactly the situation your in as I was there around 2 years back.
I decided to get my Bristol private hire taxi licence, I now do around 3 shifts per week most at the weekends. Pays all the bills with still enough time in the week to run my mail order cycle store. Also means I don't take a salary, which will help no end.
Depends what sort of person you are to how much risk you will take, but I did go through a period of business only when I was in the process of obtaining my taxi licence and I was losing sleep because of stress and worry about my income.
Be careful, also use your gut feeling aswell.

I was lucky in that circumstances contirved for me to go for it but only you can make the call. You have a mortgage it has to be paid and businesses will always take longer to pay than you think.
One thing that helped me was that I could provide consultancy while I grew my business which paid many of the bills. Other than that can your other half help (if you have one) or family? If you think the business is a real goer could you sell the house and move in with your folks?
These sound drastic but if you are backing yourself, you have to go for it. Good luck regardless....

I think many existing business owners have been in the same boat as you find your self in, myself included.
You need to be honest about your business/product to the point of brutality. What i mean is that you came up with the idea, so by default you will think it is a good idea. That doesn't mean that it automatically is.
You haven't given any details on your business so we can't offer any advice on here, but what i would suggest is do a little market research, even if it means something simple and low rent like asking strangers in a pub their opinion. But try to steer clear of asking friends for their opinion as the friendship could cloud the truth.
You should get an all be it rough guide to what people think of your idea, and if it is positive then you should go with it and put every thing you have into making it work. If there are any issues, then proceed with caution and always have a plan B for paying your way.
Maybe you could take all your holidays and use that free time to go forward with your business, if not then it is a decision you need to make on if you should make the leap or not. Good luck.

If you let us know more about your business - we may be able to come up with creative ways to use your time and the host of services out there to help you.
I've been in this position before and it is very difficult - but the most successful entrepreneurs take risks - as long as your not going to lose your house go for it - or use creative ways - and your business partners to help share the load, hopefully between you and your business partners you will have the time to ring people during the day. Take lunches at different times of the day, can you come in late some days and phone for an hour in the morning - or finish early and call?
Just think every call you are not making is potentially costing you money and that money is going to someone else - because you can bet your competitors will be running around trying to find customers at present.
