Most employees want to work for a company that is environmentally friendly but don’t feel that their bosses are giving clear leadership on the issue, a new survey suggests.

Research from the Carbon Trust shows that more than three-quarters of staff feel it’s important to work for a company that actively seeks to reduce emissions.

However 25% of employees say that their company is not doing enough and less than a fifth work for a business that has policies which encourage staff to be energy efficient.

Dr Garry Felgate, director of business delivery and external relations at the Carbon Trust, says that businesses want to be greener but are unsure on how to do it.

He said: “The majority of UK employees want to become more environmentally friendly at work, but many don't know where to start.

“It's in a company's best interest to help them, as adopting simple energy efficiency measures could save up to 10% on energy bills.

“Our research shows that one in four workers doesn't switch off the lights in a room that is not being used but nearly all say they do when they're at home.

“Simply by encouraging employees to bring their good energy habits into the workplace, businesses could reduce lighting bills by around 19% a year, not to mention significantly lower their carbon emissions.”
