My new e-commerce website is due to launch soon and I am looking for some advice and best practice on legal issues.
As my site stores registered user and customer details in our database, where can I find information on writing a ‘Privacy Policy’ for issues such as the data protection act.
And also on other issues such as ‘User Agreements’ and ‘Site Terms and Conditions’.
Or is it recommended I leave this to a Solicitor, if so what information would I have to provide him? Could I take ‘Privacy Policies’, ‘User Agreements’ etc from similar e-commerce sites and re-write them for our needs?
Thanks

Before I start, I'm not a lawyer so please accept my advice on that basis!
In the past, we've used (and pointed many customers to):
www.clickdocs.co.uk
They sell pre-written documents such as privacy policies, etc. I believe you buy them and then edit to suit your needs.
Hope this helps.

AFAIK - if an individual can be identified in any way, like if he is a Sole Trader, then you have to be registered under the Data Protection Act. This Act now covers non-electronic records.
I am not an expert, but was a Data Protection Co-Ordinator for my Company for many years.
Having a Privacy Policy or whatever does not offer any kind of exemption from your obligations under the Act.
