Hi all,
In relation to the topic on the Startups.co.uk homepage,
http://www.startups.co.uk/dispatch.aspx?a=4d41d88b-61bf-4111-8f3e-5fd4f6316254, Chain Store massacre, I need your help.
Although this article talks about them slaughtering us, now it's our turn.
I am creating a site at chainstoremassacre.com, and it is a site aimed at bringing togethor all businesses that offer a personal service, product, or most things that aren't chain stores!
It will have links and reviews of all sites submitted, and will have small logos/banners to show that you pledge your support. I will be advertising the site a lot on different forums and things, maybe newspapers if possible, so it will be a great source of advertising - and it's free to sign up.
Would anybody be interested in joining this scheme, and helping to promote home made/home based/personal businesses.
Thanks for reading and all of your support over the last 7 months.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Chris Naylor

What I would be in favour of is a group that includes both online and offline entities. Large chainstores take on both sectors with success, playing one against the other. This leaves the smaller trader (on or offline) fighting what seems a losing battle.
Bringing together what is good about both - the personal service, the attention to detail etc - may allow a certain amount of added value in the value chain of the smaller businesses. This may be through cross-working, networking or simple sharing of potential burdens.
Limiting it to one media - online - whilst forgetting the other will allow larger stores to succeed nearly every time. Allying forces gives greater chance of success for smaller traders.
This may sound like a chamber of commerce or small business pressure group (of which there are many) but I have yet to see one that successfully strides what should not really be a divide.
