So what will ensure a top page placement in order to get your site noticed? In search engine speak, how can you optimise your pages?
There are no guaranteed search engine tricks but to improve your chances there are a number of methods that you can employ. These include website and page quality, effective use of metatags and avoiding deliberate spamming (excessive use of a single keyword or phrase).
If you have your website down to a tee you should be fine as not all search engines look at metatags. You must also update your site and its content regularly, have good navigation and possibly a good search facility as well as a succinct and informative homepage.
However, if you register with automatic search engines you will need to have effective keyword, title and description tags on your page. This will involve time and thought and also stepping into the mind of a user. Think about what words they will be entering. Make them both general and specific to your business and industry and include combinations of words as well as common misspellings, the name of your region and aim to include around 50 keywords in your list.
As well as this do some research and observe what your competitors are using in their metatags and work around it. Above all, don’t pile in repetitive words and beware of using upper case as some engines are case sensitive.
Your title and description are equally important. Be descriptive and think of how you want your site to be represented when viewed. Creating metatags may sound complicated but is, in fact, quite a simple process which can be done without much experience and knowledge of the subject.
