Most UK businesses are ill equipped to deal with a breach of their IT security and so are vulnerable to attacks by computer hackers, new research suggests.

The survey by IT firm nCircle shows 65% of bosses have no way of finding out whether their business is becoming more or less vulnerable to technology system violations. Some 69% of firms admitted to not being able to generate data that shows their vulnerability to security breaches.

Elizabeth Ireland, of nCircle, said: "If they are unable to measure the scale of their exposure and its impact, they have no chance of meeting the security challenge effectively, and will remain hostage to hackers, Trojans and other malware."

Many businesses, the survey claimed, were also bad at managing their internal technology use policies, with over half saying that they found it hard to do so.
