Has anyone used affiliate marketing as a merchant?
Has it worked?
Which companies would you recommend?
Thanks,
Ian.

Hi Ian,
Affiliates will work and it has worked for many in the past, however going down the right track is very important. Now when people search in the google, can you tell me how will they find your site on it. Have you heard of the UKfives a similar business to yours unique in their way. These are some of the businesses like yours, www.footballfives.co.uk, www.footiefives.co.uk and you'll get an idea. If you want i can help you out on this. I can introduce you to my friend really good in Internet marketing and works on performance basis and for a start he will be usefull to you. Once you get in touch with him you'll get a better idea about affiliates, Keywords to be used on your site to get on top search and also keep your business ticking.
Anyways answering your question affiliates will work make your study before u go down that route.
Cheers
Daniel

Ian,
It can work well and if you select the right site it can work really well.
The thing to remember is that it is a cost / numbers game, i.e:-
If your site is getting 300 visits per day, only 1 of those will click through to the affilliate site, then only 1 in 10 of those will buy something so therefore you will earn 10% of 3 sales per month average sale is £30 therefore you will earn £6 per month per 9000 visitors. (these are rough numbers and I use them as a basis for my marketing rates)
If you sell advertising on your site like www.footiefives.co.uk @ £10 per side banner per month you could get upto 5 or six of those on your site therefore bringing in £60 per month.
Also another thing to take into account is the number of visitors, It is very hard to sell advertising on sites that receive less than 1000 unique visitors per day, however affiliate schemes are not bothered as unless you sell something you don't get paid so it is FREE advertising for them.
Again it is a numbers and costs game.
Good Luck though

Unless you have a site that is always in the first top ten of search engine listings whenever people search for the relevant product available from the affiliate merchant, there is little chance you will make any money out of it.
The best way to make affiliate marketing work is to design a site that will specialise/address a specific area of the trade, and make sure by SEO, proper site structure, PPC or whatever, the site will be in the top 10 of the search engine listings, when relevant products to that trade are searched for (as key phrases).
Once you have managed that, then you can safely put banners of the affiliate merchants, products of whom you would wish to sell on commission, knowing there will be some interested traffic to those sites, ending up in purchases. Else, you will be placing a banner which will serve as nothing more than a free advertising banner for the supplier merchant, with guaranteed "nil" sales.
In short, affiliate marketing will only work as good as your site structure and its visibility on the net.

I suppose an example of what the previous poster was on about could be the site I'm developing. It lets travel agents add holiday offers, and lets visitors search the offers. I'm putting affiliate links on for accommodation only providers, car hire, holiday insurance and flights etc. The fact that the visitors on my site are already looking for something in the industry is part of the battle done.
Got to get loads of visitors for it to be any benefit though.

Sorry, I think I may have mislead you or used the wrong terminology with my question. I do not want people to advertise on my site for me to earn money. In fact the reverse, I would like for people to be able to put my banners on their sites in return for a commission on sales generated.
Danyboy - I have dropped you an email.

Hi Ian
Thanks for your reply, however i did not receive your email, try resending the email to danielusah@yahoo.com and i will take it forward to my friend to help you out, as he specialises in What you are talking about. Get your self on different relative sites and get traffic to your site.
Another strategy i can think off wouldn't know if it will help is target one particular industry for example all the Call Centres in the UK and send them details that you would like to conduct or organise a corporate event and let them know what you do once you get the feed back from them you'll get a lot of ideas. 1st of all if 2 or more companies show interest its business for you and if others want to think about it or want you to get back to them you have prospects for the future.
Hope this will help.
I'll Wait for your email
Cheers
Daniel

It is a lot easier if you are the affiliate merchant! All you need to do is contact one of the major affiliate networks where affiliate sites go to find merchants with related products / banners to promote online. They apply to be your affiliate agent through the network site and become one only with your online approval/confirmation.
Once you have your affiliate agents registered throughthese networks, you can extract all data such as general information about the agent, amount of transactions the agents individually generated, commission due to those agents etc. And actually pay the commission to the agents through the network. For providing all this, the networks will charge say 10-15% commission on the total commission you pay to your agent sites.
The most efficient merchant network sites you should contact are: BuyAt, Trade Doubler, and Affiliate Window. There are others if you do a search on the Google. I suggest you contact each network site for more info on their operations and services.

Hi Ian,
I got your mail and have passed on your details to my friend, and he said he will make use of this weekend to make a study on your site and then get back to you next week sometime, so that he will have substantial facts and relevant ideas to give. I think that's fair enough and he will speak to you soon,
Cheers
