Sales of new domain names have spiked for the third year in a row this January, as businesses rush to register their company name in the new year.
Domain name registration company Amenworld.com said it had seen a consistent rise in domain name sales in January and February since 2005, as people starting businesses as new year’s resolutions register their company’s online presence.
Last January, the number rose by more than a third for .co.uk domains, with a 22% increase in registrations of .com domains. In February, .com registrations increased by a further 37%.
To avoid problems similar to Apple, who reportedly paid a million dollars for their iphone.com domain when a member of the public registered it before they did, Amenworld said entrepreneurs should register a domain name as soon as possible after deciding to go into business.
Andrew Fassnidge, Amenworld’s marketing manager, said: “Along with giving up smoking or hitting the gym, registering a domain name is rapidly becoming one of the most popular and fashionable new year’s resolutions.
“It’s encouraging to find that people intend to begin online ventures as part of their good intentions for the new year,” he added.
