Is there much of a difference between being a sole trader or just simply self employed. Next year I am being made redundant and am looking at going self employed as a Freelance Trainer/Tutor teaching a variety of subjects including Basic Food Hygine, Working Safely, Basic Computer Skills etc.
I was just wondering whether I will actually be self emplyed or a sole trader. Do I have to have a Business name (even my own name) that has to be registered?
Many Thanks

As far as I'm aware - it's just all terminology for the same thing!
I set up my own business using a name (unregistered) & initially I told clients I was freelance. On all documentation I am regarded self employed but am also a sole trader as I work alone!
Just go for what feels best, unless of course someone knows different...

There are really just three legal categories of business in the main ie sole trader, partnership and limited company. A sole trader and partners in a partnership are self employed, directors of a limited company are employed by the company as it is a seperate legal entity. Louise is right, you can be called DJG and Co or DJG ( then what you do) or call yourself a name like Lime One, if you are not limited then you need to make sure your name and trading address are clearly shown on all business items ( cards, letterheads etc) and displayed in your premises so your customers etc know who they are dealing with.
