Is there a special add-on or an application, possibly web based, that I could use to co-browse websites with my friend?
So that I could see the contents of my friends screen, when he's surfing the net.

I don't think this is possible unless you learn how to hack, which is highly illegal. As far as a software program that is legit, I've never heard of one.

It's not illegal if your "friend" knows you are doing it and agrees. What you need is something called VNC (Google it) VNC allows you to view another PC's screen and even take over the mouse & Keyboard should you want to (and it is setup this way).
You install a VNC SERVER on your friends PC and then a VNC CLIENT on yours - you then log into their PC via it's IP address, if your friend is behind a firewall or a router then it's a bit more complicated to setup but still possible.

I'd go for Microsoft NetMeeting and similar kinds of applications. There's also a totally web based alternative, called Screen2.com.

Windows XP has already got a standard solution for your problem, it is Remote Desktop Connection - doesn't it work for you?
