The government is inviting social entrepreneurs to tender for the new Social Enterprise Action Plan.

The Cabinet Office has published an invitation for 20 social enterprise ‘ambassadors’ to take part in the scheme.

The ambassadors will attend awareness raising events, and offer their opinions and advice on successful social enterprise, with the aim of attracting new entrepreneurs to the sector.

The Cabinet Office said the event ‘will help to position this growing business sector as an aspirational career choice for people who wish to combine enterprise with achieving social or environmental goals’.

“Social enterprise is a growing movement, but still only one in four people know about it. That means we are losing potential entrepreneurs, customers, and investors. That has to change,” said Ed Miliband, minister for the Third Sector.

“Once people see social enterprise, they understand it and become enthusiasts. We want to create an ambitious programme, owned by the sector, which will spread the message of what social enterprise can achieve throughout the country.

“Through their own stories and networks the ambassadors will help the movement achieve even more.”

The programme was first proposed in November 2006 at the Scaling New Heights action plan on social enterprise. The ambassadors will be chosen in time to be the face of Social Enterprise Day on November 15 2007.
