hi,
what do you guys think of the following domain names
.uk.net
.eu.com
.gb.com
.gb.net
I guess these are pretty new additions to the www, but are they for any particular field ? What are your thoughts when contacted by a company with one of these addy's ?
Do you think that if a domain name i wanted was taken (.co.uk or .com) that i should avoid the above variations ?
so many questions...i'm off to buy a fan !

they aren't top line domains, sound a bit weird, not great from the marketing point of view when you want "easy to remember".
I have a client who has a UK.net domain, but he was insistent that he had hiscompanyinitspurestversion. something and .uk.net was the best alternative as his ex business partner had bought the others..

These are not true top level domains. In the UK stick to .co.uk or .org.uk or possibly .me.uk. (if you are desperate). Worldwide, stick to .com, .net, .org, .info or .biz.

Hi,
As Kieron states you are better sticking to the standard generic domain names such as .co.uk, .org.uk, or .me.uk for UK web sites
(note we sell all these domain names and .uk.com are the most expensive, and therefore the most profitable to sell, but here I offer you impartial advice). Also, if you intend to target UK search engine traffic ensure you host your site with a REAL UK web host with servers in the UK.
If you intend to target international markets then you should contemplate a top level domain such as .com, .net or .org domain.
It can be difficult when you find that your original name has gone, but with a bit of brainstorming with some friends you soon find you can find a better alternative. Make your domain name short and informative, and try to incorporate keywords.
eg. www,Dans-Flag-Sales,co,uk or www,DansFlagSales,co,uk
And what about this if your .com domain is taken:
eg. www,DansFlags-UK,com
You can get a free new UK domain name with our Windows hosting and if you order before the end of April we will upgrade the account for free. Full details here:

Hi,
IMHO i would only use .co.uk or .com
If you own one, you should also own the other. I.E. www.mcdonalds.com & www.mcdonalds.co.uk. Try looking for mcdonalds with the other extensions. they are none existent, as large corporate companies recognise most people only look for .com & co.uk (if your in the UK)
I am sure the other extensions have their place in cyberspace, but if you know the name of the company you need the URL for, you will try the www.companyname.com or .co.uk. If you have no joy with these, are you really going to try all the other possible combinations of .uk.net eu.com etc. i don't think so!!
A .co.uk extension shows current & potential customers you are a UK business (Apart from foreign companies using .co.uk extensions!!!) and a .com extension shows your company has a presence world wide. the other extensions just show that you were beaten to a good URL by people who thought of the URL before you. Avoid being second best, choose another URL.
Like i said at the start. This is my opinion.

I'd definitely only use the .co.uk and change your domain name.

Hi Dan,
I'm not 100% certain of this but I think you'll have problems marketing the .gb.net style domains in the search engines.
I recently bought a me.uk and I can't find it anywhere in google.com - however when I bought a .com and pointed it at the same website we started to appear, maybe pure coincidence!
